2021: The St. Thomas Student Memorial

This project was done as an entry for a competition where the University of St. Thomas was looking to erect a special memorial for students who have passed away. My design was based primarily on the traditional obelisk designs you can find in most cemeteries, but with some minor additions and modifications. Firstly, it wouldn’t be a very tall monument since the contest had a height limit of about 8 ft. Secondly, I wanted the materials used to be the same stone/brick material used to construct most of the buildings around the university campus, as a way to further cement the monument’s place as part of the overall St. Thomas community. And lastly, my favorite detail, is the addition of a glowing sphere placed on the top of the obelisk. An orb that will glow all year round and forever acting as a beacon of remembrance to those the St. Thomas community has lost over the years. And if desired, the orb could even emit different colored light depending on the purpose or occasion, such as yellow, blue, white, or purple for the colors of the University of St. Thomas.
